What's YOUR Twitter Formula?

Image
Twitter: Professional or Personal? When I speak to groups, I often talk about how I use Twitter as my main source of rich professional development and as a transformational PLN builder (Personal Learning Network). I don't use Facebook personally or professionally at all. If you've been reading my blog or follow me on Twitter you know that we broke up a few years ago.  Read Dear Facebook , We Need to Talk. I think every Twitter user has some kind of  formula for their Tweets. For me, (and this SO not scientific though I did have to get my calculator out!)  I Tweet 82% ed tech & library, lesson ideas, curation and content building, being a shameless sharer and giving back to my community. I want to give more than I take. I try not to Tweet in an echo chamber.    8% pop culture - Doctor Who, Real Housewives, Sherlock, etc, 4% personal - the random and oft times inarticulate sophomoric thoughts going through me heid, my travels, Oh and weird dreams. ...

Gaming, Zombies, & Education for the Win!

Hi! My name is Gwyneth and I'm NOT much of a gamer. Oh, it feels kinda good to admit that! I mean, as much of a geek grrl as I've always been I know I *should* be a gamer but alas, epic fail. Not many games have held my attention for too long. Sure, like everyone else I played & aced Angry Birds as soon it came out but I was more of a fan of the plush birdies than getting 3 stars on every level. I grew bored fast. Though I did see the possibility for teaching math, science, and other subjects with the game using Chrome Apps . I PWNED Plants Vs. Zombies! The other game I was drawn to was Plants vs. Zombies, which I will shamelessly brag I am an expert in beating! ( PLANTS Vs. ZOMBIES Game Tips at end of this post! ) Imagine my surprise when I saw this.... Cyberbully Zombies Attack! The popularity of PvsZ was not lost on the the people of Net Smartz Teens (sponsored by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children) Cyberbully zombies are attacking...

I am a Total Gleek! Hip Cultural Literacy

Image
So, thanks to my friend Sondra I am totally, irrevocably, and joyously a Gleek now! I just pre-ordered the Glee: The Complete First Season on Amazon to be released on Sept. 14th because I missed the first part of the season - and yes, I know I can watch them on Hulu - but I want to OWN these - maybe even show musical clips at school! And no, Glee may not appropriate for elem kids but for middle+ and hip grownups it's a HOOT! AND it provides a lot of teachable moments if parents watch the show with their teen. Glee almost makes me contemplate graduating to teach High School - then I come to my senses and say Naaaaah! I'm still too immature for HS! Two bits of exciting Glee news: Apparently even Sir Paul McCartney is a Gleek! He passed onto Ryan Murpy the show's creator a CD of music! What the what!? According to the New York Times & Reuters : “It came out of blue in a package, handwritten, and it had two CDs, and it said, ‘Hi Ryan, I hope you will consider some of th...

Hashtags and Snuggies for Geeks

Image
so, i spent all last weekend blogging about the iPad...reading the #educon tweets and thinking about the unconference....thinking about hashtagging, falling in love with Sqworl and trying to empty out my DVR. (and missing the Pirate Feast my wimpy fears of driving in snow in DC!) " Hashtags are fun for creating short-lived little memestorms..." Nancy White is brilliant. i can't believe she's part of my PLN! her latest blog entry is amazing! Tagging and face-to-face events she writes and i also take the pledge: "My days of passive participation are over and done with: For me, the reason to go to a big conference is the small group conversations with people I already know somewhat or with whom I share a common interest We have the tools to coordinate and connect before, during and after the event — to keep the conversation going (it starts before the conference and goes afterward as well) "Using CPsquare’s “ sidecar ” participation in the AoIR Conference (...
