Ticket to Ride: FREE Helpful Printables & Chromebook Management

Image
Blog post ideas come from all kinds of places - including Instagram comments! In fact, one of the reasons I started this blog some 13 years ago was to share the content I made to help other people. Hate reinventing the wheel and I remembered when I was a baby Librarian I started with NOTHING. Was hoping to help to save someone else time and to remember what I did when, where, & how! So, now as I am a fully seasoned and experienced Librarian (and retiring!) I thought I would pass along some tickets, presentations, and printables that could be of some help. Before you try and download a copy of any of these -  Tech Tip - Log into your preferred Google Drive. If you get a message you need permission - that means you're not properly logged in. PLEASE Login and try again. Thank you! (Student Repair Ticket - Make a Copy ) Chromebook Repair, Loan, & Management This year has been ALL about our Chromebooks. Haven't had the time or the ability to teach much when every 5 minutes...

10 Coloring Pages for Women's History Month

Image
Hey gang! I just want to share with you a few coloring pages I curated online & made into PDF's & JPEGS for my kiddos!  I love adding new coloring pages to our Makerspace, especially during special months and with themes. There are a LOT of FREE coloring pages out there for your Makerspace, you just know how to find them, adapt them, & follow the copyright licensing! I uploaded the curated coloring sheets as Jpegs on Flickr embedded below and to download as Printable PDF's on Slideshare. If you source or curate coloring pages make sure to research back to the origin or artist (RARELY it's Pinterest! Dig deeper!) and make sure to include the correct artist and attribution - and make sure it's been listed as FREE or Creative Commons. Am I harping on this too much? NEW Google Image Search Save

Image
Google has quietly unveiled a super handy new way to search...and Save Google Images! I just stumbled across this and was like, Whaaat? It's super cool, but it's going to make my job trying to teach students (and teachers) NOT to just always use (and give sloppy attribution) Google Image Search instead of my beloved Flikr Creative Commons ! Gah!!! LOL When you're logged into your Gmail or Google and you go to Google Image Search, click on any image and you now see two little new buttons that say Save? and View Save? Try it! Voila!  But it's quirky! I just checked this morning when I got into school, logged in with my other Gmail account (you know we all have more than one, amirite?) and it didn't work! But when I logged into the one that I was on yesterday at home, all my saves were there! So, quirky!  Same computer, Firefox, maybe it's because it's NEW?   So, with anything new by Google - your mileage may vary.   Click for the full size exa...

Who Needs a Librarian When You Have Google?

Image
This just popped out of my mouth when I was doing the question & answer portion of my keynote last week at the AISL Baltimore conference. And I like it! What do you think? Librarians are the Key  to Information Mastery! There's a lot of talk out there that it's the end of librarianship because of Google and the Interwebs.  I know other states getting rid of their school librarians - but I gotta say Nay, Nay! Let us not give up the good fight! things are seemingly dire and bleak for our profession, what with California & Now, is when the world needs librarians the most! With SO much information out there who else better than a librarian to decode it, curate it, interpret it, organize it, authenticate it, and integrate it? Who else but the librarian is going to teach attribution and Creative Commons? Who else but the librarian is going to be able to filter through millions of research results, then curate and create a playlist of amazing resources i...

Catfishing & Google Image Search by Image

Image
If Manti Te'o had just used Google Image Search by Image , he might not have had to contend with  the last media blitz interview, still being asked about his "imaginary girlfriend" catfish scandal as exposed by Deadspin . (I've been * fascinated * by this story since it broke!) And though I'm not much of a "sporty" girl (though I LOVE me my Orioles! ) I hear he handled the recent furor well and may be entertaining the idea of becoming a Baltimore Raven! You go, Manti! Stay strong! What is Catfishin g? The Manti Te'o scandal is a great teachable moment and example of digital awareness, citizenship, and catfishing.  So, What is catfishing? The Urban Dictionary definition is above. The Term comes from a  movie (and an MTV show). From a related article: " ‘Catfishing,’ a slang term for creating fake profiles on social media to create false identities, has its origins in the 2010 movie ‘Catfish,’ a pseudo-documentary that chronicled a you...

How to Easily Archive & Embed Tweets

With Search Hash & Google Apps! The Backstory: Taking our TLVirtual Cafe webinar series and Twitter chat #TLChat one step farther a few months ago we started #TLChat Live! (For some reason I always have to type the word LIVE! and Science! with an exclamation - don't judge.) Spearheaded by Joyce Valenza, Nikki Robertson, and a core group of or TL Geek Tribe (volunteer moderators listed on our TLChat Live! front Wikispaces page! Add your name to the list! ) we were so jazzed to get this ball rolling! We meet the 2nd Mondays of the month at 8pm Eastern time , we chat for an hour on a crowdsourced topic , share ideas, grow our PLN, make new connections, and enjoy each others company! It's grand! Our first Live! discussion hour was on September 17th and thanks to Library Girl Jennifer LaGarde we have a cool infographic created with Easel.ly to share about it! Wow! Pretty outstanding, right? The Archive from the chat is embedded on our wikipage . (come right back I w...

Google+ Teacher Academy, Seattle!

Image
So....even though I'm very transparent about my practice and profession here and on the Twitters I kept pretty mum about the fact that I was applying to the Google Teacher Academy cause I guess I didn't want to jinx it, humiliation, you know...the usual! You see, I missed my opportunity to go the Washington, DC 2009 GTA in my own backyeard with my mentor Joyce Valenza and my former student teacher the awesome Danielle Du Puis. The next one was in Australia - I didn't even try for that one...Cha Ching...Why? As one of my FB peeps said "Kathy Kaldenberg I assumed you were already a GCT! I think you'll be teaching them a thing or two."  (Yeah, right!LOL) Don't Miss It!  Ha, ha..me teach Google? One can only hope! But that's how I missed the GTA in my backyard of Wash DC -everyone assumed I was in & I missed the narrow application window! DOH! (Srsly, I can't keep up w/everything!) But I *have* been preaching the Google message since...
