10 Easy Instagram Photo Book Challenge

Image
Lately, I've grown fascinated with the Instagram #BookChallenge and the #BookBento photo technique.  So, here's my rendition, see above graphic or make a copy of my GoogleDoc . Feel free to take, use, share, & make it yours! (With attribution please) Confession: I'm kinda lazy, some book challenges are 30 or 31 days...I chose 10 pictures just to make it doable and easy.  Have you heard of these? Have you ever participated in one? For the past 6 months, I've been working on a new presentation for a keynote appearance in Ohio and it's making me more thoughtful about the potential of Instagram. More clever ways to interact with Libraries, literacy, books, reading, kids, and our community. UPDATE : October 5. I changed number 5 in the graphic & challenge above to #BookSelfie.  I have an announcement [taps mic] I am an idiot. Here's why. I've always LOVED the term #Shelfie cause it's fun to say, where kids & people hold up a...

Maker Marvelous: Book Page Pumpkins

Image
Hey dear readers, Gwyneth here!  I haven't had a guest post in 7 or so years, but I thought this was such a great idea I begged my dear fellow HCPSS Teacher Librarian, Danielle Du Puis, (and my former student teacher!) to let me share this super ....actually, ......marvelous Maker Idea! Confession: I LOVE Pumpkins (but NOT Pumpkin Spice!) Pumpkins are perfect for the Fall season...from September to December, a Book Page Pumpkin is great to create! Now, for the details. Book Page Pumpkins At the beginning of the school year I started my 9th year as a high school media specialist (14th year as a media specialist overall). I did what I do at the start of every year - unpacked my desk, ordered new books, prepped for my first week of lessons, talked with teachers to schedule media orientations, and got ready to greet our new students. However, after unpacking my things from the summer school pack up, I had some difficulty finding supplies that I needed that I knew I had...

Smiling About Bitmoji Books

Image
My favorite avatar creator Bitmoji , which I've been blogging about since 2015 (links to those posts below) has recently added a few NEW cartoons featuring books! But, as my Twitter & PA friend Ms. Kim Mento Tweeted, they were sadly dour faced! So, using Photoshop Elements, I pasted some open smiles on my faces. Whilst I was at it (any excuse to use the word whilst!) I added my much needed bangs, blonde highlights, changed my tennis shoe pops of color, and ummm a Harry Potter book or two! It took just a little bit of editing to give my @Bitmoji a smile about carrying her books! I'm not at the level of @GwynethJones with her bangs, but at least now there is a smile above that stack of happiness! #amreading pic.twitter.com/uYbMVB85UR — Kim Mento (@wordsofmento) July 5, 2018 To which I replied... Thanks @Bitmoji for the book cartoons - but as a Librarian, you know I needed them to SMILE! Plus, I really would like a bun with bangs option! (I can add the...

Speed Dating for Book Lovahs!

Image
Hello Book Lovahs! I want to share with you a favorite book selection activity that the kids dig, is super silly and fun, creates a lot of excitement, and makes the books fly out of the library! I first blogged about this with you back in 2013 , added a genre twist last year in 2016, and now I've added a video and a few new tweaks.  My kids love this lesson so much they even ask me in the hallway, “When are we going to do that again?” - so next year I'm going to try and run it both in the fall and in the spring. With my middle school kids this activity is guaranteed to make them grin, giggle, and cringe a little...ok, a LOT. Give yourself permission to really ham it up. Because prepare yourselves, book lovahs, this is super cheezy!   All the resources, printables, graphics, and videos are FREE for you to take, use, & share because they're made using the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.   ...
